This weekend has been jam packed with eating, family activities, and enjoying some much-needed time off. With our bellies stuffed and bodies exhausted, I wanted to get the girls into the Christmas mode by getting our tree before the end of the weekend. Living in Brooklyn that meant trekking with our little cart to a local nursery where we would stiff through rows of deliciously smelling green trees to find the ‘perfect’ one a.k.a a tree that would fit in our apartment. Not much as changed except we now go to a local farm to find our tree – with the same needs to fit and feel just right for the family.

Like last year, we headed to Wilkens Fruit & Firm Farm over in Yorktown Heights to find our tree.  A quick trip, the farm is situated on a gorgeous plot of land where you’ll find Douglas and Fraser Fir trees. Upon arrival, the girls instantly hopped on the trackers that were situated on the properly. A cool but not freezing day, they pretended to drive with the gorgeous collection of full trees in the background. After that, we saw a ton of Fraser trees but they seemed too tall for our house so we took the free tracker to the plot of land where the Douglas trees were situated. Along the way, we saw a wine tasting area, the bathrooms, and you guessed it: beautiful scenery. Within five minutes, we were in the other section where there were tons of trees of all sizes. After looking through the rows of trees and figuring out the right width and height, we came across one that we all loved. The crew at Wilkens are all over the land and super helpful as they sawed the tree down (you can also do this part yourself) and carried it for us to the tracker. It was so easy!

Then we took a paper with the info of our tree as they wrap it up for us. We were then free to explore and ducked into the bakery for some free (yes, free!) apple cider. We also loved watching the  staff at Wilkens make apple cider donuts and ended up buying some to enjoy with our hot drink. They also have tons of other goodies like pie, popcorn, muffins, and more. At the adjacent store, you’ll find Christmas wreaths, ornaments, baskets, gifts, and more.

Excited to get home and decorate, the girls ended the day climbing hay and playing with tired that were on the property. Actually getting the tree on the car was also really easy. We simply showed the ticket of our tree where an employee hoisted and tied it up for us. Just like that we were done and had our tree secured.

A fun day of exploring,  the experience at Wilkens Fruit & Fir farm was such a fun way to kick-off the traditions of the upcoming holiday as we all got excited for the month ahead.
