Attending a Broadway show is always a dream. There’s something so wonderful about escaping in the words or music of any artist. As a mom, getting away to enjoy a night out on Broadway is few and far between so I really appreciate any chance I do get to experience theatre. I recently did just that and took in a production of Bright Star, the new musical by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell.
Taking place in the 20s and 40s in North Carolina, the story follows the personal journey of two main characters (Carmen Cusack (Alice) and A.J Shively (Billy Cane) who are trying to find their way in life post World War II. Written by Steve Martin and based on real events, it was incredible to see the story unravel through a stunning set and a gorgeous score. The show hits you at the first song as Carmen (Alice) takes the stage, along with the cast to belt out “If You Knew My Story,” which is essentially what this musical is about as we follow her journey.
Through it all, the audience was taken along for the ride through an eye-awakening journey that was filled with a gorgeous score and amazing dancing. The band was brilliantly on the stage for the whole musical, both subtly concealed and on display, as the audience experienced a treat of listening to a Bluegrass band play banjos, piano playing, guitars, violins and more. The uplifting and transformative music and lyrics were developed was developed by Grammy-winner Edie Brickell. Her refreshingly modern and upbeat songs brought the audience to tears on many occasions. She remarked that The Sound of Music was the first musical that she saw in theaters, and wanted to write songs that would be joy to people
An emotional journey, Bright Star wasn’t only Alice and Billy’s experience, but also a rollercoaster that the audience embarks on as we sat on the edge of our seats waiting for the story to unravel. A tour de force with its brilliant story, score and dancing, Bright Star is filled with hope that’s captivating, moving and infectious and whose characters will stay with you for a long-time. And that’s a very good thing.
