Mother’s Day at the Children’s Museum of the Arts

Mother's Day events with Children's Museum of the Arts

Mother’s Day is just around the corner. And while I don’t like a big fuss from my family (however, strong coffee and flowers would be much-appreciated). With all of the craziness in our lives, I basically just want to spend time with them and going to the city for a day of adventures, like a trip to The Children’s Museum of the Arts, is always up there on my list of things to do. To make it extra special, they are hosting tons of cool workshops and events, and major bonus: Moms are free all day long.

Check out some of their fun workshops as your kids flex their creative minds and as you witness the magic.

Inspired by 11 year-old Daila Melhem’s portrait of her mother in CMA’s permanent collection, young artists will create portraits of a special woman in their life, be it their mother, grandmother, aunt, teacher, coach, or friend.

Robb Putnam Flowers

Inspired by Robb Putnam’s work on display in the gallery, young artists will create up-cycled flowers for Mom on Mother’s Day! Love your Mother while loving Mother Earth!

Animating Textiles Family Workshop at South Street Seaport
Saturday, May 7, at Seaport Studios, 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM
As part of the Downtown Design Festival, join Teaching Artists from the Children’s Museum of the Arts for a special animation workshop with the whole family on May 7th, 11am-1pm in Seaport Studios. Inspired by CMA’s exhibit, “Sew What?”, participants will learn all about iStopMotion software, as they animate the traditional designs of the Kuna people of northern Panama, known as “Molas”. These are colorful designs with geometric patterns and animal representations. While traditionally created with fabric, families will be animating with a variety of materials such as wax sticks, cray pas, wire and yarn to bring these vibrant images to life one frame at a time! Don’t miss this one time opportunity to spend time with your family learning about the tradition of the Molas while creating and animating your own! Each family will leave with a special CMA gift bag worth $32!
$15 per person (adults and children)
