I love checking out performances of all kinds with my daughters. It’s so magical to watch their eyes light up as they watch the performers take the stage and dazzle the crowd with singing, dancing and acting. This weekend we did just that when we had the awesome opportunity to check out the show, Broadway Playhouse: George & Ira Gershwin. Held at the Kaufman Music Center, Broadway Playhouse introduces kids to amazing writers of musical in a fun and interactive way.
For this performance, we had the chance to get a preview of the show right before it started where the cast taught us the Gershwin brothers’ famous song “I Got Rhythm” from Crazy Girl. With the guidance of the cast, the kids were belting out the song, complete with a microphone that was passed around, with a newfound appreciation for the classic song. The show itself was also highly engaging as the cast included games, more sing-alongs and dance to teach the audience about the history of the Gershwin brothers. The cast also got kids involved in the production as names were randomly picked out of a hat where they came on the stage and participated in telling the story with the small and energetic cast. A fun and exciting morning, I loved how the show made these classic tunes accessible and entertaining for a younger audience.
Designed for kids ages 4-11 years old, the Broadway Playhouse company will be back later this year as the put on a production of Harold Arlen/Wizard of Oz on 2/12 and Alan Menken/ Beauty & the Beast on 3/5.
