Last week I had the very special opportunity to see Tuck Everlasting on Broadway with my oldest girl. As a mom of three, it is rare to have solo time with the girls, especially with her since she has school, playdates and various activities during the week. The hustle and bustle of our lives often takes over the small moments, so I was thrilled to have the chance to have a special date with my big girl.
After a fun ride on the Metro North (complete with books and silly apps), we made our way to Times Square where my daughter was in awe of the sights and sounds of the city. Even though we have only moved around 10 months ago, everything was fresh and exciting to her, especially with the busyness of the city.
At the theatre, we loaded up on junk food (all part of the experience!) and looked at the gorgeous set decoration. Once the play started, we were immersed in the world of Tuck Everlasting, a musical that follows the Tuck family who has figured out a way to live forever. It was incredible to experience this with my daughter who was sitting at the edge of her seat. She loved Sarah Charles Lewis, who played 11-year-old Winnie Foster, who held her own amongst the rest of the talented cast. Her voice was soulful and distinct, that over the course of the show, you almost forget she is only 11!
With some complex themes and ideas of living forever, my daughter asked tons of questions about this concept. What I thought was remarkable was how she realized the importance of Winnie’s choice, and how she ultimately chooses to live a life, even if it means one that includes death. Throughout the musical, I was also in awe of the talented cast who told this unique story so beautifully, and with so much heart.
A fantastic musical for kids and adults, Tuck Everlasting will have you questioning the complexity and beauty of life through rousing dialogue, gorgeous lyrics as told from its heartfelt and incredible cast.
Post show we continued our late(!) date together with fries and burgers from Shake, Shack so tired but buzzing from the experience and our special time together.
